STRATEGIC SANITATION PLAN FOR MOCÍMBOA DA PRAIA AND ILHA DE MOÇAMBIQUE

Phase IV - Environmental, Socioeconomic and Demand Level Studies - 2014 - 2015 - Environment - Mozambique - Water Regulatory Council (CRA) - Water and Sanitation Infrastructure Administration (AIAS)

Environmental, socioeconomic and demand level studies were carried out within the scope of Phase IV of the Strategic Sanitation Plan (PES) for Mocímboa da Praia and Ilha de Moçambique.

These studies were carried out with the purpose of including the environmental and social component in the decision-making process, in order to create guidelines for the determination of actions to be taken in the PES.  The method applied followed the three phases below:
   • Phase 1 - Preliminary work: On the one hand, the collection, analysis and systematisation of information from various sources and, on the other hand, the preparation of two types of questionnaires (one for households and the other for people with disabilities);
   • Phase 2 - Field work: 777 questionnaires were completed (389 in Mocímboa da Praia and 388 in Ilha de Moçambique), distributed across the various neighbourhoods, according to their respective number of houses. The field work also included interviews with all Neighbourhood Secretariats (a total of 44), visits to schools and health units in the two municipalities.
   • Phase 3 - Study development: The information collected in previous phases led to the development of the study itself. This information was processed in order to provide basic inputs that allow for the environmental and socioeconomic dynamics of the municipalities to be observed, focusing on a set of biophysical and socioeconomic dimensions, which were the starting point for determining the main problems and malfunctions of the sanitation system in the region.
